Babae po ako! September 29, 2007
Posted by Diadem in : Lessons in life , 3commentsOften times, people who don’t know me personally perceive me as a male simply because of the name “Diadem”. I just ignore it because, somehow, this elates me to some extent, believing that I have a unique and tricky name. Not until I meet the “deceived” people or talk to them on the phone. I have to tell them, Babae po ako (I am a female)!
This has been an ordinary scenario in my life even as a grown up young woman. The silly thing is that I found last year that I was registered as a male in National Statistics Office (NSO) when I needed to apply for a passport. The gender entry in my birth certificate was a
four-lettered word—“Male”!
This made me sick because the Department of Foreign Affairs asked me to submit an affidavit explaining why the gender entry in my birth certificate was male. This affidavit would entitle me to get my first passport. If I needed to renew it, I have to submit an annotated birth certificate from the NSO. And an annotation needs court order!
At first, I thought those requirements were easy to obtain. But when I talked to a lawyer, a court order needs a “huge” amount (for people who have a meager income like me, the amount required is really huge), and it requires patience because, as we all know, we have a snail-paced judicial system.

I miss my father September 6, 2007
Posted by Diadem in : Lessons in life , 19commentsMy father is celebrating his 94th birthday this September. Yes, you read it right, he is that old! He was 64 when I was born, and he died when I was 19, three months before my graduation in college.
Unlike my other siblings from his first marriage,
he missed many important events in my life when I was 17 because he was senile and suffered from stroke. But I enjoyed his company when I was growing up. He always brought me to my siblings in Bulacan and Manila, who were either older than or of the same age as my mother.
I am the youngest from a brood of 12. Ten are my half brothers/sisters, and I have one full blood brother, who is three years older than me. Being the youngest gave my father the opportunity to pamper me materially and emotionally. He gave me extra money whenever he received his salary from his carpentry work. He even instructed me “not to tell your mother!” He encouraged me to use it for my extra curricular activities in school, which my mother did not want because it drains our family budget. (more…)
Guard your mouth and tongue September 4, 2007
Posted by Diadem in : Lessons in life , 8commentsMany people will try to destroy you…they will talk sharply about you, and try hard to put you down. In my quest to make myself strong and remain in control, I silently pray for answers and I came across with the following article from www.gotquestions.org/gossip-Bible.html.I hope you, too, will find light from reading it.
God considered gossip to be such a serious matter that He included the avoidance of it as one of the Ten Commandments. “Thou shall not bear false witne
ss against your neighbor” (Exodus 20). When you repeat something you heard from someone else, or share a story where you’re not 100% certain the facts are correct, or even share information about another person that will only bring them harm and not good, you are bearing false witness against them. Since the second greatest commandment is “Love your neighbor as yourself,” you would be breaking that one as well by gossiping. Would you gossip about yourself to others? If not, then why commit that act against your neighbor? (more…)
