The blooming miracle and beauty of life in me December 7, 2007

Some of my friends lately flatter me saying, “Blooming ka ah!”

As if on cue, I reflected on the word “blooming” in the context of maturity as I looked back on the day when my company’s executive director offered me to head the Development Communication Division early this year.

I was hesitant because I was not prepared. I felt too young to lead. I consulted many of my close friends whether to take it or not. In the end, I grabbed the opportunity. It’s time to grow. Bloom time!

I have learned from this experience that the first blooming step is to make a choice, much like what Paul Newman told Kevin Costner in the movie, Message in a Bottle, “Make a choice…and stick with it!” If that be so, I must believe in myself, just like what Keanu Reeves blurted out in the flick, The Matrix, “I’m the one!”

The tasks ahead were formidable because my staff are even young and fresh graduates. While they ooze with idealism, creativity, and talents, they had to be guided before they could earn their stripes. I tried my best to lead by example.

With butterflies in my stomach, I always told my classmates or write in slum books that I wanted to be a doctor, lawyer, movie director, or a flight stewardess. Never did I realize that I would be a development communicator.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t either be any of those because my parents lacked the financial resources to send me to a medical, law, or film school. And to my dismay, I could not be a flight stewardess because I am petite!
