Ode to the Farmers April 3, 2009
Posted by Diadem in : Travels , trackbackThe furrow divides the brown earth
Amidst the heavy thuds of the humongous beast of burden’s feet,
Waiting for the first drop of torrential rains
That quenches the thirst of both man and beast.
In the caverns of your heart
Dwells the indomitable spirit,
Fighting poverty by your steady stride
In the vast canvas of the sun-dried, rain-drench rice field,
Safeguarding the environment
Abused by man’s own greed,
His insatiable quest for 30 pieces of silver!
Mankind’s patrimony you cherish
Amidst the political battle for its possession,
Mindful of its destruction
Against the onslaught of the giants’ greed
Hidden under the cloak of genetic imperialism
And plant variety protection!
Woe to those who clamor for change
That imperils mankind’s heritage!
Woe to those who destroy hopes
That hides under the ugly face of protectionism!
Woe to those who stymie the march of science
In the name of misguided environmentalism!
Woe to those who erase ancient knowledge
In the name of scientific monsterism!
Unto your hands spring forth
The sustenance of life,
Mindful of the legions of hungry crying babes
Lulled only by the enchanting tone of a mother’s lullaby
And the soothing hush of swaying panicles
Undisturbed by the grinding thresher
That brings forth the golden grain
